WebP to PNG when the file has an alpha channel

Use webp to png when the WebP has transparency you still need, or when a tool accepts PNG and rejects WebP. The output starts as PNG. Alpha in the WebP is kept in the PNG. There is no paint step onto white unless you switch the destination to JPEG, which is the wrong choice on this page. Quality is not how you shrink this PNG. The decode and the save happen in this tab.

How to turn webp to png

  1. Add a WebP that you want as PNG. Drop, paste, or Choose files. Up to one hundred files can be converted together.
  2. Leave the output on PNG. That is the default. JPEG would paint away the alpha. WebP would leave you where you started.
  3. Do not set a background colour hoping to keep transparency. The colour is for destinations without alpha. PNG can store the alpha, so leave the picture unpainted.
  4. Treat quality as the shared converter control, not as a PNG compressor. The PNG holds the decoded pixels, including alpha where the WebP had it.
  5. Press Convert images and download the PNG. Use a ZIP when more than one file is ready. Check a corner of a sticker: it should still be clear, not white.

WebP to PNG options explained

Output defaults to PNG. WebP alpha is kept. Fully clear and partly clear pixels are written into the PNG alpha channel instead of being blended onto a colour.

The background field defaults to #ffffff and is not the way to preserve a cut-out. It applies when the destination has no alpha, such as JPEG. Stay on PNG if the clear edge is why you came.

An opaque WebP becomes an opaque PNG. You do not gain transparency the WebP never had. The hop is still useful when the receiver rejects the WebP extension.

Expect a larger file. PNG does not keep the WebP lossy packing. If you only needed a smaller WebP, this is the wrong direction. Compress png can pack the PNG afterwards, losslessly if you leave its reduction controls off.

Keeping the alpha channel

WebP can carry alpha the way PNG can. This page decodes that channel and writes it into the PNG. A sticker, a logo, or a UI export with soft edges should look the same on a checkerboard after the convert as it did before. That is the test.

Switching the output to JPEG throws that test away. The clear pixels would be painted onto the background colour, default white. If someone asked for PNG specifically because of transparency, leave the menu on PNG and do not experiment on the only copy.

Opaque WebP files

Not every WebP has alpha. A photo exported as WebP is often fully opaque. webp to png still writes a valid PNG, and the picture matches the decode, but you have not created a cut-out. The corners are as solid as they were.

The usual reason to do that hop anyway is a pipeline that only ingests PNG. Accept the larger file. If the pipeline actually accepts JPEG, webp to jpg will be smaller. Choose based on the receiver, not on the hope that PNG means smaller.

Size, quality, and the next step

Quality on this page does not posterise the PNG and does not set a kilobyte cap. The PNG is the decoded bitmap. If it is too big, open compress png, leave max side and target at 0, leave Reduce colours off, and let OxiPNG try a lossless pack.

Dimensions stay the same. This page does not resize. A multi-frame WebP is not given a frame picker. Convert the still image you mean to keep. SVG and HEIC do not belong here. They have their own decoders.

Limits, formats and output

Accepted input WEBP
Files per batch 1–100
Soft size warning 50 MB each
Hard stop 500 MB total in memory
Output The chosen image format, or a ZIP for a batch
Account None. The tool runs in this tab.

Your file never leaves your device

This WebP is turned into a PNG by code in this browser tab. The work runs in a Web Worker in this tab, using WebAssembly for the heavy parts, and the result comes back as a local blob. This site does not upload the file, store it, or log its name.

To verify: load the page, turn on airplane mode, and drop the file again. It still finishes. Or open DevTools, choose Network, and watch the run: there is no upload. The architecture is described on How it works.

Frequently asked questions

Does webp to png keep transparency?

Yes, when the WebP has an alpha channel. Those pixels are written into the PNG. They are not painted onto white. If you change the output to JPEG, the alpha is painted away, so leave the output on PNG.

Will an opaque WebP become clear?

No. The PNG cannot invent transparency the WebP never stored. Opaque photos stay opaque. The page only preserves alpha that was already there.

Why did the file get larger?

The WebP packing is gone. PNG stores the decoded pixels, including alpha. That is normal. A lossless OxiPNG pass on compress png may claw some bytes back. It will not match a lossy WebP size.

What is the background colour for?

It defaults to #ffffff and is used when the destination has no alpha. PNG has alpha, so you do not need to paint. Change the colour only if you deliberately switch this file to JPEG.

Can I convert several WebP files?

Yes, up to one hundred, all to PNG. Download a ZIP when more than one result is ready. Spot-check one file that you know has transparency before you archive the rest.

Does this resize or crop?

No. Width and height stay. There is no rectangle and no longest-side field. Use resize image or crop image afterwards if the PNG still has the wrong frame. Each of those tools also stays in the tab.
