AVIF to JPG using only the browser decoder
Use avif to jpg when you have an AVIF still and you need a JPEG. Decoding uses the browser through createImageBitmap. There is no bundled AVIF decoder in this page. If the browser cannot open the file, you are told so, and nothing is sent away to be decoded elsewhere. There is no AVIF encoder, so the download is a JPEG, not another AVIF. Quality starts at 80. The encode stays in this tab.

How to turn avif to jpg
- Add an AVIF still, or up to one hundred. Drop, paste, or Choose files. The page does not fetch a decoder plugin. It asks the browser you already have.
- If the browser cannot decode AVIF, stop. The message is that the file cannot be opened. Updating the browser is the fix. This site will not upload the AVIF to work around that.
- Leave quality at 80, or move it after you see one JPEG. The slider is the JPEG encode. It does not create an AVIF and it does not resize.
- Do not look for an AVIF output. There is no AVIF encoder here. JPG is the result. PNG and WebP are not the point of this page.
- Press Convert to JPG and download the JPEG, or a ZIP when more than one file decoded. A file the browser rejected is not silently replaced with a blank image.
AVIF to JPG options explained
Decoding is createImageBitmap only. No AVIF codec is shipped with the page. A current browser that already understands AVIF will open the still. An older one is told it cannot open the file.
There is no AVIF encoder. You cannot save AVIF from this tool, and you cannot round-trip back to AVIF to “keep the format”. The output is a JPEG at quality 80 unless you change the slider.
Quality defaults to 80 and runs from the shared quality control. Higher stays closer to the decoded bitmap and usually costs bytes. Dimensions are whatever the browser decoded. This page has no width field.
A batch is allowed, up to one hundred, but every file depends on the same browser decoder. If one AVIF fails to open, that file does not become a JPEG. The others can still be tried.
Why older browsers stop
AVIF support lives in the browser, not in a library this site bundles. createImageBitmap either returns the picture or it does not. When it does not, the honest result is that the file cannot be opened. You are not offered a server fallback, because the file is not supposed to leave the tab.
That limit is the product, not a broken button. A browser that can show the AVIF in a normal image view is the browser that can convert it here. If the picture will not open locally, this page will not open it either.
JPEG out, never AVIF out
People ask to compress an AVIF back into a smaller AVIF. This page cannot. There is no AVIF encoder. The useful download is a JPEG at the quality you set, default 80, which older forms accept. If you still need AVIF after that, you need a different tool than this site.
The JPEG is a new encode of the decoded pixels. It is not a container edit. Transparency, if the AVIF had any and the browser decoded it, is not something JPEG can keep. Expect an opaque JPEG. Do not expect a quality slider to put the file back into AVIF.
What else this page is not
It is not the HEIC decoder. iPhone HEIC uses heic-to on its own page, including a separate chunk. Dropping a HEIC here is the wrong tool. It is not the WebP converter either. webp to jpg is for WebP, and that path does bundle a WebP encode for the other direction.
It does not resize, crop, or strip as a separate preview. You get a JPEG at the decoded dimensions and the quality you chose. Run resize image or remove exif data on that JPEG if the next step needs a shorter edge or a metadata check. The AVIF itself is never accepted by the EXIF page.
Limits, formats and output
| Accepted input | AVIF |
|---|---|
| Files per batch | 1–100 |
| Soft size warning | 50 MB each |
| Hard stop | 500 MB total in memory |
| Output | The chosen image format, or a ZIP for a batch |
| Account | None. The tool runs in this tab. |
Your file never leaves your device
This AVIF file is decoded by the browser inside this tab. The work runs in a Web Worker in this tab, using WebAssembly for the heavy parts, and the result comes back as a local blob. This site does not upload the file, store it, or log its name.
To verify: load the page, turn on airplane mode, and drop the file again. It still finishes. Or open DevTools, choose Network, and watch the run: there is no upload. The architecture is described on How it works.
Frequently asked questions
Which decoder does avif to jpg use?
The browser, through createImageBitmap. There is no bundled AVIF decoder. If this browser cannot decode AVIF, you are told the file cannot be opened. The file is not uploaded to another decoder.
Can I save AVIF as well?
No. There is no AVIF encoder on this site. The download is a JPEG. Quality starts at 80. You cannot convert JPEG back to AVIF here either.
What should an older browser do?
Read the message that the file cannot be opened, and use a browser that already decodes AVIF locally. Reloading this page does not add the codec. The page will not send the file out to be converted.
Does quality change the size in pixels?
No. Quality 80 is the JPEG encode. Width and height are the decoded still. Use resize image on the JPEG if the frame has to change. This page has no longest-side field.
Can I convert several AVIF files?
Yes, up to one hundred, if the browser can open them. Download a ZIP when more than one JPEG is ready. A file that fails to decode is reported. It is not replaced with an empty picture.
Is this the same engine as heic to jpg?
No. HEIC uses the separate heic-to chunk. AVIF uses only the browser decoder and then a JPEG encode. Mixing the two files on one page will not make the HEIC path run.
