Turn each PDF to PNG page, with white or clear background

PDF to PNG renders each selected page with pdf.js and saves a PNG. You get one image per page. Transparency is optional. With the toggle off, the page is filled white first, the same idea as PDF to JPG. With it on, empty areas can stay clear.

How to convert a PDF to PNG

  1. Add one PDF. If it asks for a password, use the one you already know.
  2. Set Pages with the same syntax as the other page tools: 1-3, 5, 8-. Leave the field blank to render every page.
  3. Choose DPI from 72, 96, 150, 200, and 300. The default is 150. Higher DPI is a bigger bitmap.
  4. Leave Transparent background off for a white fill. Turn it on if you need the empty parts of the page to stay clear. PNG can store that. JPEG cannot.
  5. Press Convert to PNG. Download each PNG, or use Download all when there is more than one page. That pack is a ZIP of the PNGs.

PDF to PNG options explained

DPI uses the same scale as PDF to JPG: the render scale is DPI divided by 72. A combined render over about 400 megapixels is refused before it starts, so you can lower the DPI or cut the page range and try again.

Transparent background defaults to off. Off means the bitmap is filled with white, then the page is drawn. On means that fill is skipped, so pixels the page does not paint can stay transparent.

There is no JPEG quality slider here, because the file is a PNG. The size of the PNG depends mostly on the DPI and on how much flat colour the page has. A photo-heavy page makes a large PNG.

When a clear background is real

Transparency in the PNG is the absence of a fill behind the render. It is not a separate cutout of the foreground. A page that already paints a white rectangle will still look white, because that rectangle is part of the PDF. The toggle only skips the fill this tool would have added.

Text, lines, and images are all baked into the PNG. You cannot turn the PNG back into editable PDF text by running it through PNG to PDF. That tool places the picture on a page. It does not recover a text layer.

Extract images from PDF is the other image export. It saves images the page paints, skips duplicates, and writes PNGs of those images only. It does not draw the page. Use PDF to PNG when the whole page is the picture you want.

Memory and page ranges

A 300 DPI render of a long document is the usual way to run out of memory. The error asks you to lower the DPI or render fewer pages. 150 DPI is the default because it is readable without that cost on a normal letter page.

The page range is 1-based. 1-3, 5, 8- includes pages 1, 2, 3, 5, and from 8 to the end. An empty entry from a double comma is an error. A backwards range such as 6-2 is an error. The message names the problem instead of guessing.

Limits, formats and output

Accepted input PDF
Files per batch 1
Soft size warning 200 MB or 1,000 pages
Hard stop 500 MB total in memory
Output PDF, or a ZIP when there is more than one file
Account None. The tool runs in this tab.

Your file never leaves your device

Your PDF is rendered to PNG by a script running in this tab. The work runs in a Web Worker in this tab, using WebAssembly for the heavy parts, and the result comes back as a local blob. This site does not upload the file, store it, or log its name.

To verify: load the page, turn on airplane mode, and drop the file again. It still finishes. Or open DevTools, choose Network, and watch the run: there is no upload. The architecture is described on How it works.

Frequently asked questions

How is PDF to PNG different from PDF to JPG?

Both render with pdf.js at the same DPI list. JPG always has a background, default white, and a quality slider from 40 to 100. PNG can leave the background transparent, and it has no quality slider. Use PNG when you need a clear background or sharp flat colour. Use JPG when you want a smaller photo-like file.

Why is my transparent PNG still white?

The toggle stops this tool from painting a white rectangle first. It cannot see through a white rectangle that is already in the PDF. Many documents draw one. If the page content itself is opaque, the PNG will look opaque, which is an honest picture of that page.

Which DPI should I pick?

72 or 96 for a screen-sized picture. 150 for a readable page. 200 or 300 when you will print the PNG or place it large. Those last two are much heavier. If the tab stops, the next try should be a lower DPI or a shorter range, not the same settings again.

Can I render a single page?

Yes. Type the page number alone, such as 2. You then get one PNG and no ZIP. A range still makes one PNG per listed page, with Download all as a ZIP when there are two or more.

Does the PNG include the text as text?

No. The glyphs are pixels. Copying from the PNG copies nothing useful. The original PDF still has the text layer if it had one. PDF to text reads that layer. A scan has no layer to read, and this render does not create one.

Is there a file size limit?

The PDF warns around 200 MB and stops at 500 MB in memory for the files you added. The render has its own cap, about 400 megapixels across the pages you asked for. Either limit can hit first. Shorten the job if you see either message.
