Unlock PDF files with the password you already have

Unlock PDF files only when you already know the password. The pages are copied into a new document that has no encryption. There is no cracking and no recovery. A wrong password stops the job. An empty field tries an empty user password first, and if that fails you are asked for the real one.

How to unlock PDF files

  1. Add one PDF. If it is not encrypted, you still get a rewritten copy, which is harmless and usually unnecessary.
  2. Type the user or owner password you already know. Leave the field blank only if the file opens with an empty user password.
  3. Press Unlock PDF. The file is opened with that password. The pages are then copied into a new PDF with no encryption.
  4. If the password is wrong, the job stops. Nothing is guessed. The file stays in the list so you can try again.
  5. Download the new file. It should open without a prompt. The producer line is Upload Nothing (uploadnothing.com). The outline from the original is not copied.

Unlock PDF options explained

The password field accepts the user password or the owner password, whichever one you have that opens the file. This page does not choose a weaker one in secret. If neither works, the file stays locked.

A blank password is not an attack. The loader tries an empty user password, which some files allow while still carrying restriction flags. If that opens, the restrictions are dropped because the new file has no encryption. If it does not open, you get a password prompt, not a bypass.

The result is a copy of the pages, not an edit of the encrypted bytes in place. Text stays selectable if it was selectable. A file that was only restricted, and not encrypted with a user password, is the empty-password case described above.

What unlock means here

Unlock means you proved you know the password, and the tool wrote a new PDF without encryption. The warning on a normal success says the password was removed because you supplied it. That is the whole authority this page has.

It will not take a hint, a partial password, or a list of tries. One password is checked. Wrong password is a stop, not a cue to start a search. If you do not know it, the honest outcome is that this page cannot help.

Copying pages drops the encryption dictionary because the new document never had one. It also drops the outline. Page content, size, and rotation are what the copy carries. Form fields on those pages are copied when the library can carry them.

After the file is open

The downloaded file is ordinary PDF. You can merge it, compress it, or edit its metadata. Compress will set the producer string again, which is the same string unless you are on Edit PDF metadata and you type a different producer.

If the original was a scan, the unlocked copy is still a scan. Removing a password does not create a text layer. PDF to text will return the empty-text error when there is no real text.

Limits, formats and output

Accepted input PDF
Files per batch 1
Soft size warning 200 MB or 1,000 pages
Hard stop 500 MB total in memory
Output PDF, or a ZIP when there is more than one file
Account None. The tool runs in this tab.

Your file never leaves your device

Your PDF is copied without a password by a script running in this tab. The work runs in a Web Worker in this tab, using WebAssembly for the heavy parts, and the result comes back as a local blob. This site does not upload the file, store it, or log its name.

To verify: load the page, turn on airplane mode, and drop the file again. It still finishes. Or open DevTools, choose Network, and watch the run: there is no upload. The architecture is described on How it works.

Frequently asked questions

Can you recover a password I forgot?

No. There is no recovery and no cracking. Unlock PDF requires the password the reader already knows. A wrong password stops. A blank field only tries an empty user password, which is a real password some files were saved with, not a guess at yours.

What does the download contain?

A new PDF. The pages were copied into a document that is not encrypted. You should be able to open it without a prompt. It is not a digital-rights bypass. The tool opened the file with the password you typed, then saved a copy without that lock.

User password or owner password?

Either, if it is the one that opens the file. The field does not ask you to declare which is which. If the only secret you have does not open it, this page cannot elevate it into the other password.

Why did an empty password work?

Some files are saved with an empty user password and with restriction flags set. They open without a prompt and still claim to be restricted. Opening with that empty password and copying the pages drops those flags, because the new file is not encrypted. The page tells you when that is what happened.

Are bookmarks kept?

No. The new file is a page copy, and the outline is not copied. Text on the pages is unchanged. If you needed the sidebar bookmarks, keep the encrypted original and the password.

Is the password stored?

It stays in memory for this job. It is not an account field and it is not written into the downloaded PDF as a reminder. When you start over, type it again if you need it. Closing the tab drops it.
