Edit PDF metadata, or clear the info dictionary

Edit PDF metadata by reading the info dictionary and writing a new one, or by clearing it. The page shows title, author, subject, keywords, creator, producer, creation and modification dates, whether an XMP packet exists, plus page count, page size, PDF version, encryption, and form field count. Dates are shown. The fields you type are the info strings.

How to edit PDF metadata

  1. Add one PDF. If it is encrypted, type the password you already know. The page loads the current info fields into the form.
  2. Read the summary: page count, page size in points, version, whether the file is encrypted, how many form fields it has, and whether XMP metadata is present.
  3. Edit title, author, subject, keywords, creator, and producer. Keywords are comma-separated. Producer defaults to Upload Nothing (uploadnothing.com), and this page keeps what you type.
  4. Turn on Remove all metadata if you want the info dictionary cleared and the catalog Metadata entry removed. The saved file still gets the producer string Upload Nothing (uploadnothing.com).
  5. Press Save metadata and download the PDF. Check the summary on a fresh add if you need to confirm the fields. Page content is not cropped, numbered, or recompressed by this save.

Edit PDF metadata options explained

The typed fields are title, author, subject, keywords, creator, and producer. Empty fields are written empty, which clears that value. Keywords are split on commas when they are saved. Creation and modification dates are displayed from the file. They are not separate boxes you edit on this form.

Remove all clears the info strings and deletes catalog Metadata, which is the XMP packet when one is present. It then sets the producer to Upload Nothing (uploadnothing.com). It is not a silent wipe that leaves the producer untouched.

On every other PDF tool, saving overwrites the producer with Upload Nothing (uploadnothing.com). This page is the exception: the producer field is kept as you leave it, because the save does not replace it afterwards. The default in the box is that same string, so leaving it alone writes it too.

What the summary is telling you

Page count and page size describe the first page’s dimensions in points, along with how many pages exist. Version comes from the header, such as 1.7. Encryption is yes or no. Form field count is zero when the file has no AcroForm fields, or when the file is encrypted and the fields cannot be counted without opening it that way.

XMP metadata present means the catalog has a Metadata entry. Remove all deletes that entry as well as the info dictionary fields. A viewer that only shows the info dictionary will look empty after that, aside from the producer line this save writes.

The summary is a read of the file you added. It is not a promise about the download until you save. If you change title and do not press Save metadata, the download does not exist yet and the original bytes in the list are unchanged.

What metadata editing does not change

Page content, rotation, and crop boxes stay as they were. This is not Compress PDF, and it does not recompress images. It is not Flatten PDF. A form remains a form unless you flatten it on that other page.

EXIF inside a JPEG that happens to be embedded in the PDF is not the info dictionary. This page edits the PDF info dictionary and catalog Metadata. It does not walk every image and strip camera data. A photo’s own metadata is a different tool.

Limits, formats and output

Accepted input PDF
Files per batch 1
Soft size warning 200 MB or 1,000 pages
Hard stop 500 MB total in memory
Output PDF, or a ZIP when there is more than one file
Account None. The tool runs in this tab.

Your file never leaves your device

Your PDF info dictionary is edited by a script running in this tab. The work runs in a Web Worker in this tab, using WebAssembly for the heavy parts, and the result comes back as a local blob. This site does not upload the file, store it, or log its name.

To verify: load the page, turn on airplane mode, and drop the file again. It still finishes. Or open DevTools, choose Network, and watch the run: there is no upload. The architecture is described on How it works.

Frequently asked questions

Which fields can I change?

Title, author, subject, keywords, creator, and producer. Keywords are separated by commas. Dates are shown, not typed as their own fields. Remove all clears the info dictionary and catalog Metadata, then writes the producer as Upload Nothing (uploadnothing.com).

Why is producer special?

Other tools on this site set the producer to Upload Nothing (uploadnothing.com) whenever they save. This page does not overwrite the producer after you edit it. The box starts with that string. Change it if the file should name a different producer. Leave it if that string is acceptable.

What does Remove all delete?

The info dictionary values and the catalog Metadata entry, which is where an XMP packet lives. The page content stays. The producer line on the saved file is still set to Upload Nothing (uploadnothing.com), so the file is not anonymous in that one field.

Does this remove a password?

No. An encrypted file still needs the password you already know before the fields can be saved. Unlock PDF is the page that copies pages into a document with no encryption, and only with that password. This page does not guess it.

Will the page count change?

No. The summary reports the count. Saving metadata does not add, delete, or reorder pages. Use Organize PDF, Delete pages, or Extract pages for that. Those tools will set the producer string again when they save.

Is XMP the same as the title field?

No. The title you edit is in the info dictionary. XMP is the catalog Metadata stream, when the file has one. The summary says whether it is present. Remove all clears both. Editing the title alone does not promise to rewrite every copy of the title inside an XMP packet.
