PNG to WebP for screenshots a site can serve

Use png to webp when the site wants WebP and the file you still have is a PNG screenshot, a UI export, or a logo. The output starts as WebP. Quality starts at 80. Alpha in the PNG is kept in the WebP, because this destination can store it. You are not painting the screenshot onto white unless you switch the output to JPEG. The encode stays in this tab.

How to turn png to webp

  1. Add a PNG, or up to one hundred. Drop, paste, or Choose files. Screenshots and logos can share one quality, but look at one of each before you trust a single number.
  2. Leave the output on WebP. That is the default. JPG would flatten transparency onto the background colour. PNG would not convert anything.
  3. Leave quality at 80 for a photo-like PNG. For a screenshot full of text, raise it and read a line of small type before you accept the file.
  4. Leave the background colour alone if you need the clear pixels. They are kept in the WebP. The colour, default #ffffff, is for a JPEG destination, not for this one.
  5. Press Convert images and download the WebP, or a ZIP of the batch. Compare bytes with the PNG. A lossless OxiPNG file can sometimes be the better screenshot. The numbers will tell you.

PNG to WebP options explained

Output defaults to WebP. PNG alpha is kept in that WebP. Clear and partly clear pixels stay clear. They are not composited onto white on this path.

Quality defaults to 80 and controls the WebP encode. It can soften text if you push it down. It does not change the pixel dimensions. There is no target kilobyte field here.

The background colour defaults to #ffffff and applies when you pick a destination without alpha. JPEG is that destination. Stay on WebP and the colour is not painted over your logo.

A PNG of a photo may shrink a lot. A PNG of flat UI may shrink less, or look worse at 80. Compress png remains the lossless alternative when the screenshot must match pixel for pixel.

Screenshots and the quality slider

png to webp is the page for a docs site or a release note that still has PNG screenshots and now wants WebP. Quality 80 is a reasonable photo default and a risky text default. Thin lines and grey type pick up blotches before a sky does.

Raise quality until the words are clean, then look at the size. If the careful WebP is almost as large as the PNG, keep the PNG or run compress png for a lossless pack. A format change is not a win when the picture got worse and the bytes barely moved.

Logos keep their alpha

A PNG logo with a clear background stays clear in the WebP. That is the point of choosing WebP rather than JPEG on this page. You can drop the file on a dark header and a light header and the edge should still match.

The moment you switch output to JPG, that promise ends. Clear pixels are painted onto #ffffff unless you set another colour. If the logo has to work on more than one background, do not leave this page as a JPEG.

What this hop will not do

It does not resize the screenshot, crop the window chrome, or strip a job you should do with remove exif data. PNG text chunks are not copied into a camera-style JPEG note because the output is a new WebP. Dimensions stay put.

It does not take SVG, HEIC, or AVIF. Draw an SVG on svg to png first if you need a raster, then come back only if WebP is still required. One hundred PNGs is the batch cap, all at one quality.

Limits, formats and output

Accepted input PNG
Files per batch 1–100
Soft size warning 50 MB each
Hard stop 500 MB total in memory
Output The chosen image format, or a ZIP for a batch
Account None. The tool runs in this tab.

Your file never leaves your device

This PNG is encoded as WebP by code in this browser tab. The work runs in a Web Worker in this tab, using WebAssembly for the heavy parts, and the result comes back as a local blob. This site does not upload the file, store it, or log its name.

To verify: load the page, turn on airplane mode, and drop the file again. It still finishes. Or open DevTools, choose Network, and watch the run: there is no upload. The architecture is described on How it works.

Frequently asked questions

Does png to webp keep transparency?

Yes. Alpha in the PNG is kept when the destination is WebP. Clear pixels stay clear. They are painted onto the background colour only if you change the output to JPEG.

Is quality 80 safe for a screenshot?

It is the default, and it is aimed at a general encode. Small text can look blotchy. Raise quality and read a real line of type. If you need the pixels unchanged, use compress png and leave colour reduction off.

Will the WebP be smaller than the PNG?

Often, and not always. Flat simple PNGs are already small. Compare the download. A larger, worse WebP is not worth keeping. The original PNG is still on disk.

What is the background field for?

It defaults to #ffffff and matters for JPEG output, which has no alpha. On the WebP path the PNG alpha is stored. Leave the colour alone unless you deliberately flatten to JPEG.

Can I convert a folder of screenshots?

Yes, up to one hundred PNGs, one quality for the batch. Download a ZIP when more than one WebP is ready. Check one dense screenshot first. A quality that suits a photo may not suit the UI.

Does this change the pixel size?

No. Width and height stay. Crop the chrome with crop image, or scale with resize image, if the frame is wrong. Those are separate tools, and they also run in the tab.
