Steps to resize image to 1280x720

  1. Add the picture. It stays in this tab while you resize image to 1280x720.
  2. Confirm the frame is 1280 by 720 pixels. Cover is selected, lock aspect is on, and do not enlarge is off.
  3. Run the resize. Cover center-crops to that exact frame, and the pixels are resampled with Lanczos.
  4. Download the picture. If the subject sits in a corner, the crop may have cut it, so look before you submit the file.

How this target is applied

Cover center-crops to the exact 1280 by 720 pixel frame. A square photo loses the top and bottom so the wide frame fills. A matching 16:9 photo keeps more of the original.

Do not enlarge is turned off, so a smaller original can grow to 1280 by 720. The pixels are resampled with Lanczos. Growing a small picture looks softer than shrinking a large one. Format stays on keep.

Why 1280 by 720 pixels

Slides and video stills often need a 16:9 frame at 1280 by 720 pixels, sometimes called an HD frame. This page opens on that size. It is a pixel frame for a screen, not a print size and not a named network slot. A tall photo will lose the top and bottom under cover.

Layouts and slide files reject a picture that is merely close. 1280 by 720 is the exact frame, with fit set to cover so you do not get a smaller image floating inside the box.

What to expect from the resample

A large photo is cropped to 16:9 and resampled with Lanczos down to 1280 by 720. Detail usually holds. A small photo is enlarged to the same frame because do not enlarge is off, and the enlargement looks softer.

Look at the top and bottom after a square source, and at the sides after a very tall one. That is what center-crop removes. The file stays in this tab.

Your file never leaves your device

Your picture is processed only in this browser and is never uploaded. The work runs in a Web Worker in this tab, using WebAssembly for the heavy parts, and the result comes back as a local blob. This site does not upload the file, store it, or log its name.

To verify: load the page, turn on airplane mode, and drop the file again. It still finishes. Or open DevTools, choose Network, and watch the run: there is no upload. The architecture is described on How it works.

Frequently asked questions

Will cover cut the picture at 1280 by 720 pixels?

Yes, when the original shape does not match 1280 by 720 pixels. Cover center-crops to the exact frame, keeping the centre and trimming the edges. A wide photo going into a square loses the sides. Put the subject near the middle, then check the download before you submit it.

Can a smaller original grow to this frame?

Yes. Do not enlarge is turned off on this preset, so a smaller original can grow to 1280 by 720 pixels. The pixels are resampled with Lanczos. Growth looks softer than a shrink, because the tool has to invent pixels that were not in the file.

Why open on 1280 by 720 pixels?

Because a 16:9 HD frame for slides and video stills. You should not have to remember the two numbers or guess a percentage. The page opens with width and height already set, fit on cover, and do not enlarge off. You can still type another size if this frame was only a starting point for a different form.

Does a DPI value add pixels here?

No. On this preset the DPI field is 0, so no density note is written, and a DPI value would not add pixels anyway. The frame is only the pixel width and height. Print pages on this site write 300 DPI as metadata beside a pixel frame.

What if I needed a different frame?

Change the width and height before you run. This page opens on 1280 by 720 pixels so the form size is already filled in. Lock aspect is on, and fit is cover, which is what makes the output exactly that frame rather than a box the picture merely fits inside.
