compress jpeg to 100 kb for a JPEG profile photo
Use this page to compress jpeg to 100 kb when a profile form requires JPEG and stops once the photo passes 100 KB. The output is JPEG. A small photo may already be under 100 KB. A large one takes a quality binary search and then a scale ladder if needed.

Steps to compress jpeg to 100 kb
- Add the picture. It stays in this tab while you compress jpeg to 100 kb.
- Confirm the target reads 100 KB, and that the format is JPEG.
- Run the compress. A quality binary search runs first. A scale ladder follows only if the file is still above 100 KB.
- Download the JPEG and check it against 100 KB before you attach it to the form.
How this target is applied
This preset forces JPEG and sets the cap at 100 KB. The tool runs a quality binary search, keeping a result under the cap when it can, and then a scale ladder if needed. It stops at the first file that fits. It does not keep damaging the picture after a hit.
A small photo can already sit under 100 KB, so the search ends quickly and the look stays close to the original. A large camera file usually needs both lower quality and a smaller width. If the source had transparent pixels, JPEG flattens them, because JPEG has no transparency.
Why 100 KB is the JPEG cap
Profile forms that require JPEG commonly stop at 100 KB. This preset searches quality first, then scales if the portrait is still too heavy. A headshot that is already a small JPEG may need only a light pass. A full frame portrait from a camera will shrink. The output is always JPEG.
Use 100 KB when the profile slot says JPEG and names that cap. If you can send a larger JPEG, the hair and the background will hold more detail.
What the JPEG search does
The quality binary search tries middle settings and walks toward a file under 100 KB. That preserves as much detail as the cap allows before any pixels are thrown away.
A busy photo shows blocks sooner than a simple graphic. At a very small cap the picture becomes a preview, not a print.
Limits, formats and output
| Accepted input | JPEG, PNG, WEBP |
|---|---|
| Files per batch | 1–100 |
| Soft size warning | 50 MB each |
| Hard stop | 500 MB total in memory |
| Output | The chosen image format, or a ZIP for a batch |
| Account | None. The tool runs in this tab. |
Your file never leaves your device
Your JPEG is processed only in this browser and is never uploaded. The work runs in a Web Worker in this tab, using WebAssembly for the heavy parts, and the result comes back as a local blob. This site does not upload the file, store it, or log its name.
To verify: load the page, turn on airplane mode, and drop the file again. It still finishes. Or open DevTools, choose Network, and watch the run: there is no upload. The architecture is described on How it works.
Frequently asked questions
Can a large photo reach 100 KB as a JPEG?
Sometimes only after it shrinks. A large camera original rarely fits 100 KB on quality alone, so the scale ladder reduces width and height until the JPEG fits or the ladder ends. A small photo that is already under the cap can stay close to its current size.
How does the JPEG target search work?
It is a quality binary search, then a scale ladder if needed. Middle qualities are tried first, and the search stops at the first result under 100 KB. Scaling starts only when quality alone cannot get under the cap. You do not have to guess a quality number and retry by hand.
Is the download always a JPEG?
Yes. Format is JPEG on this preset, even if you started with a PNG or another picture. Transparency is flattened because JPEG cannot store a transparent pixel. If you need a PNG under a size cap, use a PNG target page instead.
What if 100 KB is still missed?
You receive the smallest JPEG the search produced, and you can see that it is still over 100 KB. That is most likely with a detailed photo and a very small cap. Crop to the subject first so there is less picture to store.
Will a headshot survive this cap?
At 100 KB, a headshot survives as a recognisable preview when the cap is not tiny, and it turns soft when the cap is harsh. Hair, glasses, and a busy background suffer first. If the form allows a larger JPEG, use that larger target.
